DVIDS – News – Financial fitnesshttp://www.dvidshub.net/news/78367/financial-fitness#.TpW4F96Ik8kCAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait — Many soldiers deployed with the Mankato, Minn.-based 2nd Battalion, 135th Infantry Regiment are making more money than they do in their civilian occupations.

Like their civilian counterparts, 2-135 IN soldiers have varying levels of planning for how they’re going to put their money to work. Some have a budget that’s almost down to the dollar and some have vague versions of a plan—‘get a car.’

Also like civilian employers, the military is concerned about debt and credit because they reflect on the soldier’s level of risk and amount of responsibility.

Profiles in Courage: Military Chaplains | Daily News | NCRegister.comhttp://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/profiles-in-courage/WASHINGTON — The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA reported a sharp jump this year in the number of seminarians interested in serving as military chaplains. As the 2011-2012 academic year begins, there are 31 military-affiliated seminarians nationwide, up from three just three years ago.

The seminarians are participating in the Chaplain Candidacy Program for one of the branches of the armed forces and must be co-sponsored by a diocesan bishop. Once ordained, the priest must serve three years in a civilian parish and return to his diocese of sponsorship when he retires from active military service.

Conventual Father Kerry Abbott, director for vocations for the archdiocese, remarked, “This is one of the untold stories of the blessings of the Holy Spirit upon the Church and those faithful fervently seeking to respond to the voice of God.”

Commanders,

When you’re deployed to a combat zone, if your chaplain deserves a Bronze Star, put him in for one. If he doesn’t deserve one, fire him.

Add a place to worship to the list.

The Brigade’s Unit Ministry Team officially began church services there in the small theater this past weekend when they hosted their inaugural “Rally Point” Worship Service. The worship service and its daily fellowship get-togethers are intended to give the brigade and its attached units a place where the soldiers can re-charge themselves spiritually during their time away from their family.

Soldiers have many personal reasons for choosing to serve. Some say a strong inner urge or calling prompted them to select their current vocation.
Following a path of conviction may not always offer tangible rewards, but offers a great sense of self-fulfillment for Spc. Faith Bedwell, a chaplain assistant assigned to 101st Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Advise and Assist Task Force, 1st Infantry Division.
Bedwell, a native of Chatom, Ala., said she enjoys helping out and providing Soldiers with resources necessary to help themselves.
“I receive my reward after a Soldier gets help and comes back with a smile and says ‘thank you,’” she said.
Serving in U.S. Division-North in support of Operation New Dawn, Bedwell said many people do not realize what her job entails as a chaplain assistant.

The other side of deploymenthttp://www.wishtv.com/dpp/news/local/marion_county/the-other-side-of-deploymentINDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – We first met Terri Russell at the Indianapolis International Airport. Her husband, Jim, a chaplain in the United States Army, had been stationed at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan and was returning home, and she couldn’t wait.

Terri Russell is a military wife and mom, a double Blue Star family member. Her husband and son were both stationed in Afghanistan at the same time, although her son was able to return about two weeks earlier than his father to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

That time, with both of “her guys” away, meant sleepless nights, anxiety and shear frustration. She once sawed down a formidable backyard tree by hand, to relieve the pent up emotion, but her faith helped the most.

Capt. John Konugres, chaplain, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, is the primary chaplain for Camp Nathan Smith, though he frequently visits other military installations throughout Kandahar City, to provide ministry and counseling services for soldiers who don’t have regular access to a chaplain.
