Chaplain gives a glimpse of a soldier’s holiday season in Iraq http://fremonttribune.com/news/local/article_6c4f6b9e-0f1c-11e0-b517-001cc4c002e0.html“It is going to be a bumpy ride!” yelled the helicopter crew chief as we jumped into his aircraft, preparing to fly to a base that hadn’t seen a Catholic priest chaplain for almost a month.

It turns out impending bad weather caused us to turn around and return to base after only 30 minutes in the air. The soldiers would have to go another week without a visit.

Even though he didn’t know it, the crew chief’s words not only applied to that brief ride, but have the ability to take on a deeper significance during a yearlong deployment to Iraq.

Kittleson, 59, of St. Ansgar, is a member of the U.S. Army Reserve. He admits to occasionally feeling the pull of loneliness, but his work as as a chaplain and serving others keep the blues at bay — most days.

“We (chaplains) all feel that we are in the place where God called us,” Kittleson said.

“One of the blessings of deployment is that you work 24/7; you don’t have time to think about what you are missing,” he said during a phone interview last week.

“The ability to worship in the way they see fit is one of the constitutional responsibilities the army has,” Col. Lance Kittleson, U.S. Army Chaplain, said.

And it’s a responsibility, Colonel Kittleson is working to uphold in his second deployment.

When Christy Goetz’s husband, Dale, told her at the outset of the war in Iraqthat he wanted to join the Army to become a chaplain, she rebelled.

“I told him: ‘You’re not going over there and getting killed,’ ” Christy Goetz recalled. “I mean, he’s my honey. I love him. I don’t want anything to happen to him.”

Dale Goetz, a Baptist minister, signed up anyway in January 2004. Before long he was Chaplain Goetz, ministering to troops in Iraq later that year and the next. He volunteered for a second combat tour last summer, in Afghanistan.

“I prayed on it and realized that this is what God wants him to do,” Christy Goetz recalled. “Who am I to stand in God’s way?”

Captain Dale Goetz, Chaplain

Captain Dale Goetz cared about the soldiers he served as an Army chaplain—both their physical and spiritual needs.

“He had a great burden for the soldiers,” said Jason Parker, pastor of High Country Baptist Church of Colorado Springs. “His specific prayer request was to see 300 soldiers come to Christ. He was also praying for God to call 10 of those soldiers into the ministry. That was one of his specific prayer requests.

“God was using him. He was very actively witnessing. He didn’t want to be just a social worker. He wanted to see soldiers hear the Gospel and trust Christ.”

Goetz, a 1995 Maranatha graduate, died Monday morning, Aug. 30, in Afghanistan while serving as an Army chaplain. Parker said Goetz was one of four men killed by a roadside bomb while traveling in a convoy near Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan. His death was also confirmed in an Internet posting by Ralph Colas, Executive Secretary of the American Council of Christian Churches. Goetz was one of the group’s approved chaplains.
