Army group says there ARE atheists in foxholes – Forbes.comhttp://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2011/04/01/general-us-rel-atheists-in-foxholes_8386632.htmlRALEIGH, N.C. — The cliche notwithstanding, there are atheists in foxholes.

In fact, atheists, agnostics, humanists and other assorted skeptics from the Army’s Fort Bragg have formed an organization they hope will be a pioneering effort to ensure fair treatment and win recognition for nonbelievers in the overwhelmingly Christian U.S. military.

“We exist, we’re here, we’re normal,” said Sgt. Justin Griffith, chief organizer of Military Atheists and Secular Humanists, or MASH. “We’re also in foxholes. That’s a big one, right there.”

Brian Minietta, former chaplain of the 63rd Signal Battalion, and his wife, Patti, a former Army helicopter pilot and president of the post Protestant Women of the Chapel, took a journey in January, which fulfilled a dream. Brian always wanted to scale Mount Kilimanjaro, which is located in northeastern Tanzania, during his lifetime. It was an item on his “Bucket List”.

“Anyone could climb the mountain,” said Brian. “I wanted to do it for a cause.” When he was deployed in 2006 to Afghanistan he spent some time on the internet exploring the idea. He found a worthy cause to make such a climb. He discovered the website: visionforthepoor.com. Climb for Sight is sponsored by Vision for the Poor, (formerly Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity of Pennsylvania), which was established in 1990 to provide short term eye care to the poorest regions in Latin America.

Nearly 40 years after the last U.S. soldiers left Vietnam, Marion County veterans of that war celebrated their official welcome home day on Wednesday.

March 30 was designated as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” by a resolution recently passed by Congress and affirmed by a proclamation issued by Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

On Wednesday, dozens of veterans and their family members attended a ceremony at the Ocala/Marion County Veterans Memorial Park celebrating what some said was long overdue.

Some recounted their experiences of the hostile, even violent reactions they received from war opponents.

Among the audience members was the U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains Major Gen. Douglas L. Carver, a man Howard met when he was just starting his Chaplaincy. Howard’s influence on him led Carver to become a chaplain.

“When we first met in 1976 in Germany, I was young and inexperienced in the ministry and the military,” Howard said. “God can use you when you are young and just starting out – even when you are unaware of the impact you are making in another’s life.”

DVIDS – News – Three Red Bull Chaplains share their experienceshttp://www.dvidshub.net/news/67787/three-red-bull-chaplains-share-their-experiencesMinnesota is home to many things: the Twins, lots of snow and the Red Bulls. One cornerstone of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division is the chaplains. Currently there are three Red Bull chaplains spreading Minnesotan know how to soldiers across the nation. Two of the chaplains are at the U.S. Army Chaplain Center & School, Fort Jackson, South Carolina and one is at Fort Hood, Texas.

“It’s a really unique opportunity for the Army Guard, we are supporting active duty operations,” said Lt. Col. John Morris, head chaplain, Minnesota Army and Air National Guard. “I’m really proud of them.”

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for the Minnesota National Guard because we are at the cutting edge at both the school that trains chaplains and at Fort Hood, one of the largest installations in the country, doing real world ministry,” added Morris.

Sikh Soldier Training In SA – San Antonio & Texas News Story – KSAT San Antoniohttp://www.ksat.com/news/27314626/detail.htmlSAN ANTONIO — As he trekked up and down the thickly wooded hills at Camp Bullis, Spc. Simram Lamba wore a camouflage under-turban with his military rank beneath his combat helmet.

Lamba is the Army’s first Sikh soldier in 26 years, but said the most frequently asked question by his fellow soldiers is about his unshorn hair and beard.

Lamba said both are considered Sikh articles of faith. He called them a “natural gift from God, and we’re not going to destroy it.”

For that reason, Lamba said, the U.S. Army granted him a religious accommodation to also wear the Sikh’s requisite turban.

“The other soldiers are following their religion, and I’m doing the same thing,” Lamba said.

Chaplains use current events to maintain realism in traininghttp://www.army.mil/-news/2011/03/24/53719-chaplains-use-current-events-to-maintain-realism-in-training/FORT JACKSON, S.C. — As tensions mount in North Africa and revolutions rock the area, the rest of the world watches with a mix of dread and wonder, hoping for the best for those long-oppressed people of Egypt, Tunisia, Iran and Libya.

To keep training current and relevant, and to illustrate how current affairs can have a great bearing on how unit ministry team members may advise their commander, Chaplain (Maj.) Lane Creamer, Officer Task Analyst, U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School, hosted a brown bag luncheon for Chaplain Captain Career Course students and civilian staff at the USACHCS Fox Lab.

“The training was conducted to better prepare chaplains and chaplain assistants to advise their commanders on religion. In particular, we used real world events to ensure chaplains were current with what is taking place in North Africa,” Creamer said.

Retreats offer troops respite, resiliency traininghttp://www.army.mil/-news/2011/03/23/53692-retreats-offer-troops-respite-resiliency-training/St. Patrick’s Day couldn’t have been any better. Temperatures hovered around the low to mid 60s. A few clouds and bright sun seemed to put a spotlight on the newly blossomed dogwoods and forsythia. And Pfc. Brian Murphy, sporting a sparkling green hat, green T-shirt and jeans, seemed to devour the moments in large gulps.

“I love Virginia because I love history,” said the 20-something Soldier. “This is an awesome place to be.”

Colonial Williamsburg was that place. The 18-century outdoor museum with its rich heritage served as an unlikely backdrop for Army resilience training March 16-18, but it was perfect for nine attendees who sought a break from the daily stresses of military duty, said Chaplain (Capt.) Chris Wallace, chaplain,16th Ordnance Battalion, 59th Ord. Brigade.
