Joe Murphy’s job in Afghanistan was to hunt down the things his fellow soldiers hoped they’d never have to encounter.

As part of a route-clearance team that combed the roads connecting Bagram Airfield to outposts in the region, the 23-year-old Iowa National Guardsman gained a close-up familiarity with roadside bombs. Understanding the devices that insurgents have used to kill thousands of U.S. and allied troops in the last decade didn’t make them any less terrifying.

Heading out on dusty patrol, Murphy said, “You wonder if you might die today.”

Military Wives Turn to Bible for Marriage Advice | CNSnews.comhttp://cnsnews.com/news/article/military-wives-turn-bible-marriage-adviceCLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — With husbands deployed or off preparing for war, some young wives at this sprawling Army installation have spent much of their marriages so far alone.

Faced with long periods of separation and worry over the next combat tour, a group of wives mostly in their late 20s and early 30s are drawn together weekly to seek spiritual support to bolster the strength of their marriages.

Mya Parker, 27, saw both sides of the average military marriage and the strain that years of combat duty can do to a relationship. She served in the Army for four years on active duty before helping to start the Lantern, a nondenominational faith group for military wives and girlfriends outside Fort Campbell, Ky.

Veterans bring the war home – Sacramento Living – Sacramento Food and Wine, Home, Health | Sacramento Beehttp://www.sacbee.com/2011/12/25/4145020/veterans-bring-the-war-home.htmlCHICAGO — It was just after midnight when former Marine Cpl. James Dahan was awakened by a faint noise in the distance.

Except for the glare of his flashlight, there was darkness all around as he crept from room to room, searching for an unknown enemy.

Windows sealed: check. Doors locked: check. Building secure: check.

Yet with people pacing about upstairs, voices he did not recognize billowing through the walls and the incessant roar of traffic outside, he dared not fall asleep. So he stayed up all night repeating the routine over and over again.

Dahan returned from Iraq seven years ago. But the horrors of war followed him home.

Reese Elementary School.

“There’s a third-grade class and a sixth-grade class that are not doing what they are supposed to be. So we have to take class time to get you out here,” she said. “And I’m pretty disappointed in you. We just had a Lifeskills assembly this week, and here we are not behaving ourselves. Are you understanding what I’m saying?”

Most local pastors, though, have not put in 30 years in the Army, much of that as a military chaplain.

Miller, now on inactive duty and also called Lt. Col. Miller, commented, “My training in the military prepared me more than the seminary did in how to bring comfort to those hurting and suffering loss, including at Christmas time. As an example, bringing a family the news that a loved one has died makes you grow up fast, and it’s worse at Christmas.”
