Memory Speaks, Honor Stands Forth

Memory Speaks, Honor Stands Forthhttp://www.algemeiner.com/2011/05/31/memory-speaks-honor-stands-forth/When Four Star General Robert Magnus, USMC (retired) ascended thebimah of The Jewish Center in Manhattan to present the keynote address at the Jewish community Memorial Day 2011 commemoration, the respect of all gathered was, in its very silence, loud and clear.   The General commanded the attention – from young Marines seated at full attention in the sanctuary pews, to the veterans of many of America’s wars, to the survivors of Ghetto horrors who came to honor their liberators.  Noting that this Memorial Day presentation event was “only his third time on the bimah,” the General spoke of the responsibility and participation of Jewish soldiers in defending America throughout its history.

“(H)ere we are as a nation, pulling the rug out from under soldiers — really, is what we’re doing — and commanders to really defend this nation,” said Bishop John Neal, head of the International Communion of Evangelical Churches.

Defense bill gives cold shoulder to gay marriage | HamptonRoads.com | PilotOnline.comhttp://hamptonroads.com/2011/05/defense-bill-gives-cold-shoulder-gay-marriageThe complex $690 billion defense bill passed by the U.S. House last week includes military pay raises, money for more aircraft and ships and $119 billion to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The legislation, without a lot of fanfare, also takes aim at gay marriage. It would effectively prohibit military installations from hosting same-sex weddings and would bar Defense Department chaplains or civilians from performing such ceremonies as part of their official duties.

The military also would only recognize marriages between a man and a woman.

Retired Officers Honor Memorial Day | The Pilot: Southern Pines, NChttp://www.thepilot.com/news/2011/may/31/retired-officers-honor-memorial-day/Jack Wood – president of the Sandhills Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America – welcomed those attending the annual Memorial Day service at The Village Chapel in Pinehurst.

“The observance of Memorial Day began as a day of reconciliation and remembrance right after the Civil War,” he said. “The holiday gradually evolved over the years to include honoring and remembering Americans who died in all of our nation’s wars.”

After a color guard of students from Pinecrest High School’s Air Force JROTC posted the colors and the chapter’s chaplain Thomas A. Parsons offered an invocation, a Pearl Harbor attack survivor Roy S. Boreen led the congregation in pledging allegiance to the flag.

Kapaun carried his comrades on his back when they couldn’t walk and gave away his meager rations.”

Following the ceremony, Moran said those working for the chaplain’s medal hope to get it before U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, a Wichita  native, leaves office.

“The Secretary of the U.S. Army has already given his approval,” the senator said. “What it comes down to is getting President Obama’s approval.”

Memorial Day: Chaplains – A Reminder that We Are One Nation Under God

Memorial Day: Chaplains - A Reminder that We Are One Nation Under God - U.s. - Catholic Online

Memorial Day: Chaplains – A Reminder that We Are One Nation Under God – U.s. – Catholic Onlinehttp://www.catholic.org/national/national_story.php?id=41602WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) – I’m a veteran. Not just a military veteran (which I am) but a Memorial Day Parade veteran. My career began in Cub Scouts, marching what felt like 50 miles through downtown. As I grew older I graduated in assignments from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and then Marching Band. When I returned from Vietnam, I again marched on Memorial Day in my naval uniform complete with campaign ribbons.

The parade always ended at the cemetery where wreaths were placed around the war memorial and flowers decorated the stone monoliths marking the graves of departed soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen.

The markers meant a lot more to me on the other side of serving. I knew friends who had fallen and watched plenty of tracer bullets from the deck of my destroyer whose targets could have ended in death.

U.S. Army Chaplain (Maj.) Roger McCay, a Montgomery native, spoke to hundreds Sunday at the third annual “Service of Remembrance for Our Nation’s Fallen in All Wars” at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

“In the sacrifices of our fallen, we glorify God,” he said. “We must never, ever take for granted how blessed we are. We must never … forget sacrifices.”
