He was father William Corby. He later became president of Notre Dame University, but was best known for his actions on the eve of Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863.

What would an atheist chaplain do? :: The Republichttp://www.therepublic.com/view/story/RELIG-AKST-COLUMN_5027399/RELIG-AKST-COLUMN_5027399/From the Pentagon comes word that yet another cherished adage has been shot down.

There are no atheists in foxholes, the old saying goes. Yet it now emerges that there are atheists in the U.S. Army. And some of them are demanding they be given chaplains. As a devout atheist, I confess to mixed feelings about all this.

Finding co-irreligionists anywhere is gratifying for atheists and makes us feel like Robinson Crusoe spotting footprints in the sand. It’s especially gratifying to find atheists in the military, since even the slightest whiff of mortality is supposed to turn the staunchest unbeliever into a person of faith. That’s the point of a story about the great heathen Voltaire, who on his deathbed is said to have rejected pleas that he renounce Satan.

Mitchel Tulloss was pondering whether it was acceptable, from a theological standpoint, for the soldiers he counsels in Afghanistan to rejoice over the killing of Osama bin Laden when he abruptly excused himself from a telephone interview. He had to check on noises he thought were incoming fire.Tulloss is deployed to Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar province, a place where violent reality has a way of clarifying philosophical shades of gray.

“I would tell the soldiers that it’s all right to feel OK about [the death of bin Laden],” Tulloss said when he came back on the line.

“I know the feeling around here is one of celebration.”

Army Move on Atheist Chaplains Could Lead To ‘Church of Evolution’ - April 28, 2011 - The New York Sun

Army Move on Atheist Chaplains Could Lead To ‘Church of Evolution’ – April 28, 2011 – The New York Sunhttp://www.nysun.com/opinion/army-move-on-atheist-chaplains-could-lead/87326/The report in the New York Times that atheists are looking for official recognition as chaplains in the American military in order to cater to the needs of non-believing servicemen is interesting.

On the one hand, it’s kind of absurd. Atheist chaplains? It’s a contradiction in terms. What are they going to teach? Non-belief? What services will they offer? Non-prayers and sermons on evolution? And what comfort will they offer dying soldiers, G-d forbid (oops! Even that doesn’t work). Will they say, “Game over. You’re going to a place of complete oblivion. Thank you for your service.”?
