Ray Bradley is applying to be the first humanist recognized as a “distinctive faith group leader” by the Army. In the meantime, he can’t be designated as a humanist on his official records or dog tags, although he can be classified as an atheist. The distinction may not seem like a large one to those unfamiliar with humanism, but the Fort Bragg-based officer says it’s the equivalent of being told that “Christian” is an acceptable designation, but not “Catholic.”

It is a highly personal subject that individuals tend to keep to themselves, but Chap. (Col.) Robert Powers, the Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk’s new command chaplain, said he wants soldiers and family members to collectively embrace their faith, whatever it may be. He is willing to help by being accessible and unafraid of change or questions, he said. “I really want to build a sense of community at Fort Polk.”

Veterans bring the war home – Sacramento Living – Sacramento Food and Wine, Home, Health | Sacramento Beehttp://www.sacbee.com/2011/12/25/4145020/veterans-bring-the-war-home.htmlCHICAGO — It was just after midnight when former Marine Cpl. James Dahan was awakened by a faint noise in the distance.

Except for the glare of his flashlight, there was darkness all around as he crept from room to room, searching for an unknown enemy.

Windows sealed: check. Doors locked: check. Building secure: check.

Yet with people pacing about upstairs, voices he did not recognize billowing through the walls and the incessant roar of traffic outside, he dared not fall asleep. So he stayed up all night repeating the routine over and over again.

Dahan returned from Iraq seven years ago. But the horrors of war followed him home.

June Moss returned from the Iraq war in 2003 that her real battle began. The horrors of the war — witnessing decapitated and burned bodies amid mass destruction — led to post-traumatic stress disorder.

“I do notice when I’m stressing out that I start having dreams about what I saw and how I felt,” says Moss, now 40 and retired from the Army. “It does come back as if to haunt you.”

Baptist Press – DADT repeal examined by chaplains panel – News with a Christian Perspectivehttp://www.bpnews.net/BPnews.asp?ID=36722NEW ORLEANS (BP) — New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary’s Institute for Faith and the Public Square hosted its third major conference, examining the tension chaplains experience between exercising their First Amendment rights to free speech and religion while acknowledging the restrictions that often accompany receiving funds from public agencies.

The conference was titled “Chaplaincy: Ministering in Caesar’s House.”

“There is a growing negative atmosphere toward evangelical Christianity,” said Lloyd Harsch, church history professor and institute director. “Under the guise of tolerance, everyone who holds a religiously informed position is now viewed as suspect because they’re [considered] intolerant.”
