The inaugural Ministry to the Military Conference takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus. The forum will bring together pastors, chaplains, church leaders and other Christian organizations for a discussion on ministry to Soldiers and military Families. Service members who want to become chaplains may attend to meet with denominational leaders. Denominational support is a necessary step in joining the chaplain corps.

Proposal could pay for chaplains’ tuition | LoudounTimes.comhttp://www.loudountimes.com/index.php/news/article/proposal_could_pay_for_chaplains_tuition898/RICHMOND – Like other members of the National Guard, chaplains enter war zones and risk death on the battlefield. But at least two characteristics set these men and women apart from other members of their units.

First, instead of guns, chaplains are armed largely with prayers and comforting words for their compatriots.

And second, they don’t receive the tuition assistance that other members of the National Guard enjoy. That’s because, under the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, Virginia won’t pay for chaplains’ religious education.

Cantor, chaplain in Army National Guard, awaits orders | j. the Jewish news weekly of Northern Californiahttp://www.jweekly.com/article/full/63843/cantor-chaplain-in-army-national-guard-awaits-orders/After growing up in Manhattan, David Frommer moved to the Middle East and joined the Israeli army. Now a San Francisco resident, he might be heading back to the Middle East — this time possibly to Kuwait — as a member of the Army National Guard.

Frommer, 30, is a cantor and a military chaplain. In fact, he’s been told that he’s the first cantor to serve as a chaplain in any of the U.S. armed services.

“In early spring, New York will send the 27th Infantry Brigade combat team to Kuwait for one year,” Frommer said. “The speculation is that from there we may be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan, as needed, to train soldiers from those countries. But it’s impossible to know for sure at this point.”

The US Army Chaplain Center and School prepares chaplains for service to “God and Country” through expressing ministry to soldiers and families (and as I saw in a recent photo, little Afghani children). I will tell you why I am honored and humbled to serve here and why I believe it is indeed a national treasure:

Guard chaplain works Christmas magic anywhere   – News – The Charleston Gazette – West Virginia News and Sports -http://sundaygazettemail.com/News/201112180030CHARLESTON, W.Va. — For American soldiers serving in far away places, Christmas is a melancholy, difficult time, a challenging emotional hurdle.

Col. Bruce Reed knows the feeling. Been there. Done that. Twice. It was his job to help downhearted soldiers get through it.

State chaplain and full-time support chaplain for the Joint Forces Headquarters of the West Virginia National Guard, he spent two Christmases deployed with Operation Iraqi Freedom. Even in the desert, he found ways to bring the magic of Christmas to the troops.

His resume brims with commendations, including the Bronze Star. The honors reflect a warm, caring personality well suited to the joys and sorrows he deals with in God’s work.

He’s 59, a native of Parkersburg.

Halfway through an introductory meeting, he texted his wife to tell her, “I think I’ve found what we’re looking for.”

Several years and a lawsuit later, the graduate of Chabad-Lubavitchyeshivas expects to be sworn in next Friday and begin attending chaplain school in January. It could have happened sooner, but his beard got in the way.

And on Sundays, soldiers can find Houston presiding over a service with fellow pastors.
