“Rock Beyond Belief” is scheduled for Saturday, March 31, and plans to feature bands and speakers, including Richard Dawkins, the famed British scholar and atheist author. It will be the highest-visibility event so far in a growing effort by military personnel without belief in God or religions to be recognized by their peers and the Pentagon.

Ray Bradley is applying to be the first humanist recognized as a “distinctive faith group leader” by the Army. In the meantime, he can’t be designated as a humanist on his official records or dog tags, although he can be classified as an atheist. The distinction may not seem like a large one to those unfamiliar with humanism, but the Fort Bragg-based officer says it’s the equivalent of being told that “Christian” is an acceptable designation, but not “Catholic.”

Fort Drum – The Mountaineer Onlinehttp://www.drum.army.mil/mountaineer/Article.aspx?ID=6126When people think of a new recruit, they might envision a fresh-faced high school or college graduate ready to conquer the world, not someone with a whole other life of experiences.

Chaplain (Capt.) Steve Love, 277th Aviation Support Battalion, walked a long road of fitness, mentoring and coaching before he swapped his football jersey and pastor’s suit for an Army uniform at age 45.

Love was an all-American boy growing up in Illinois. He attended Southwest Baptist University, where he played football and met his wife, Connie. After graduating, he was offered a full-time coaching position at the college.

Col. Keith A. Jackson accompanied some of the first military forces into Afghanistan and Iraq, returned repeatedly to the combat zones and earned two Bronze Stars. He seemed destined for the military’s highest ranks.

Instead, last week, Jackson became the latest soldier to be convicted of sexually exploiting a child. Over a seven-month period Jackson, 46, a married father of two, used the Internet to send hundreds of obscenity-laced texts and about seven hours of graphic video of himself to what prosecutors said he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. In reality, it was a St. Charles County Sheriff’s detective.

A Pentagon spokesman said problems with child pornography and child sexual exploitation were not widespread in the ranks. Still, the military has taken steps to address the issue, including offering training and blocking access from government computers to some sites.

Joe Murphy’s job in Afghanistan was to hunt down the things his fellow soldiers hoped they’d never have to encounter.

As part of a route-clearance team that combed the roads connecting Bagram Airfield to outposts in the region, the 23-year-old Iowa National Guardsman gained a close-up familiarity with roadside bombs. Understanding the devices that insurgents have used to kill thousands of U.S. and allied troops in the last decade didn’t make them any less terrifying.

Heading out on dusty patrol, Murphy said, “You wonder if you might die today.”

DVIDS – News – Running for the challengehttp://www.dvidshub.net/news/81663/running-challenge#.TvOCImMr2nABAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan — Service members wear the same thing while they run, but they don’t run for the same reasons. Shortly after arriving, U.S. Army Chaplain (Maj.) Stanton Trotter, of La Palma, Calif., threw down the 82nd Challenge—running the perimeter of the airfield 82 times during the deployment.

Measuring roughly 7.5 miles, at first glance it doesn’t seem too extreme, especially to the avid runner. With a total test of 600 miles, the T-shirt payoff may seem insignificant.
