The granite monument recognizes Four Chaplains of different faiths who gave up their lives to save others during the sinking of the USAT Dorchester during World II. Freedom From Religion – Opinion – PatriotPost.UShttp://patriotpost.us/opinion/oliver-north/2012/02/10/freedom-from-religion/WASHINGTON — “We don’t need you, so shut up!” That’s the message the Obama administration has sent loud and clear to America’s Roman Catholics. And it’s a message now being sent to U.S. military chaplains — to the detriment of our armed forces.

During World War II, the War Department and the Department of the Navy urged — the operative word is “urged,” not “ordered,” mind you — U.S. military chaplains to encourage soldiers, sailors, airmen, guardsmen and Marines that God was on our side in the global battle against fascists, Nazis and the godless heathens running rampant across Asia and the Pacific. The hymns “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” were sung with fervor at chapel services regardless of denomination.

Obama Admin Accused of Blocking Chaplain’s ‘Religious Freedom’ Letter, Christian Newshttp://www.christianpost.com/news/obama-admin-accused-of-blocking-chaplains-religious-freedom-letter-68979/
Reports of a rift between the Obama Administration and the Roman Catholic Church over a “contraception mandate” have been swarming the media of late, with some saying the president was even “censoring” military chaplains from speaking out about the issue — but a military source insists the whole affair is overblown.

The controversy surrounds a recent policy change by the Obama Administration that forces institutions affiliated with religious groups to provide coverage for birth control, sterilization and “abortifacients,” all of which the Roman Catholic Church is opposed to. The church’s official position is that the ruling is unconstitutional and infringes on religious rights.

Kansas delegation asks for Kapaun Medal of Honor recommendation from defense secretary | Wichita Eaglehttp://www.kansas.com/2012/01/27/2192773/kansas-delegation-asks-for-kapaun.htmlWICHITA — The Kansas congressional delegation wrote Defense Secretary Leon Panetta a letter Friday urging him to recommend that Korean War hero Emil Kapaun be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Panetta’s recommendation to President Obama would be one of the last steps in the recommendation process; Kapaun has already been recommended for the honor by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Fort Campbell chaplains go far beyond ceremonies, services | The Leaf Chronicle – Clarksville, Tenn., and Fort Campbell | theleafchronicle.comhttp://www.theleafchronicle.com/article/20120115/NEWS08/201150333The Division Chaplain for the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne falls back on a story to explain what a chaplain is all about, and he uses it not only on curious visitors, but on other chaplains as well.

It is written on a plaque displayed prominently in his office. It is the story of “The Four Chaplains” and Chaplain Lt. Col. Paul Hurley knows it by heart. As he starts to tell it before a gathering of other chaplains, it sounds like the beginning of every “a minister, a priest and a rabbi” joke ever told, but the image is dispelled quickly as the message sinks in.

On Feb. 3, 1943, at 12:55 a.m. the U.S. Army Transport (U.S.A.T.) Dorchester was torpedoed by a German U-Boat off Newfoundland with 900 soldiers aboard. One torpedo in a spread of three blew a huge hole below the water line, dooming the ship instantly.

12 Heroic U.S. Military Chaplains - Mental Floss

12 Heroic U.S. Military Chaplains – Mental Flosshttp://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/112976After I posted 8 Heroic U.S. Military Chaplains last week, we heard from a Catholic writer, a chaplain who worked under Father Sampson (who was featured), and the pastor of the home church of one of the Four Chaplains, in comments and email. We appreciate everyone’s input! Military chaplains are classified as non-combatants, but they still put their lives on the line to serve their country and its military members—and often civilians and enemy soldiers, too. Many went above and beyond the call of duty, and their stories should be remembered.

Joe Murphy’s job in Afghanistan was to hunt down the things his fellow soldiers hoped they’d never have to encounter.

As part of a route-clearance team that combed the roads connecting Bagram Airfield to outposts in the region, the 23-year-old Iowa National Guardsman gained a close-up familiarity with roadside bombs. Understanding the devices that insurgents have used to kill thousands of U.S. and allied troops in the last decade didn’t make them any less terrifying.

Heading out on dusty patrol, Murphy said, “You wonder if you might die today.”

Dan Farley.

Parish Secretary Amy Blaskowski and Kim Auer were there going over the papers, photos and other items of Farley, the church’s priest. Farley, 54, died Sunday after a two-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

…..

Trzinski said that despite Farley’s ongoing battle with ALS, he continued to inspire the parish with his dedication to serve, whether it was in the military — he was a U.S. Army chaplain in Afghanistan in 2009, and made pilgrimages to France in each of the past two years to serve as chaplain to a group of soldiers — or simply presiding over Mass.
