The inaugural Ministry to the Military Conference takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus. The forum will bring together pastors, chaplains, church leaders and other Christian organizations for a discussion on ministry to Soldiers and military Families. Service members who want to become chaplains may attend to meet with denominational leaders. Denominational support is a necessary step in joining the chaplain corps.

8 Heroic U.S. Military Chaplains - Mental Floss

8 Heroic U.S. Military Chaplains – Mental Flosshttp://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/112386Some contemporaries wrote of the Mexican-American War as one of U.S. Protestants against Mexican Catholics. President Polk responded to such allegations by appointing two Catholic priests to serve as military chaplains. Father Anthony Rey, a Jesuit from Georgetown University with no military background or training, participated in the battle of Monterrey in September of 1846. He tended to the wounded on the battlefield and gave last rites to the dying. Afterward, serving in north Mexico, he ventured out of the U.S. garrison to minister to the locals, despite warnings of the danger. In 1847 he said a mass at the village of Ceralvo, and never made it back. His body was found a few days later, stabbed through by lances. He was mourned by both the U.S. troops and the Mexicans he served.

Herman Keizer Jr. predicts many U.S. troops returning home for the holidays will grapple with a dilemma that is surfacing with increasing frequency. It’s called “moral injury.”

“What we’ve got coming back are huge numbers of people who fought in a morally ambiguous war,” said Keizer, 73, a retired U.S. Army chaplain and former director the Christian Reformed Church’s chaplaincy ministries who lives in Caledonia.

“They’re going to come home with an idealized idea of the holidays and they’ll realize after they’ve come back, they’re alone. No one really understands.”

“Leslie Parvin sits before you today as a man who led a double life,” Nicole Simpson, a prosecutor in the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, said during her opening statement.

Luke Shealey, part of Parvin’s defense team from the 5th Circuit Public Defender’s Office, said those accusations were insulting to a decorated war veteran who has a wife and three sons.

June Moss returned from the Iraq war in 2003 that her real battle began. The horrors of the war — witnessing decapitated and burned bodies amid mass destruction — led to post-traumatic stress disorder.

“I do notice when I’m stressing out that I start having dreams about what I saw and how I felt,” says Moss, now 40 and retired from the Army. “It does come back as if to haunt you.”

The conference was titled “Chaplaincy: Ministering in Caesar’s House.”

“There is a growing negative atmosphere toward evangelical Christianity,” said Lloyd Harsch, church history professor and institute director. “Under the guise of tolerance, everyone who holds a religiously informed position is now viewed as suspect because they’re [considered] intolerant.”
