Veterans bring the war home – Sacramento Living – Sacramento Food and Wine, Home, Health | Sacramento Beehttp://www.sacbee.com/2011/12/25/4145020/veterans-bring-the-war-home.htmlCHICAGO — It was just after midnight when former Marine Cpl. James Dahan was awakened by a faint noise in the distance.

Except for the glare of his flashlight, there was darkness all around as he crept from room to room, searching for an unknown enemy.

Windows sealed: check. Doors locked: check. Building secure: check.

Yet with people pacing about upstairs, voices he did not recognize billowing through the walls and the incessant roar of traffic outside, he dared not fall asleep. So he stayed up all night repeating the routine over and over again.

Dahan returned from Iraq seven years ago. But the horrors of war followed him home.

As Iraq, Afghan wars cycle down, anti-suicide program for Minn. veterans ramps up | Minnesota Public Radio Newshttp://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/10/29/veterans-suicide-prevention/St. Paul, Minn. — On the heels of an intensive campaign to prevent soldiers from committing suicide, the Minnesota National Guard is hoping to continue reaching at-risk veterans.

Senior National Guard leaders have traveled throughout Minnesota since September, teaching Guard members how to recognize the symptoms that indicate colleagues might to try to take their own lives. To meet the growing demand for services, veterans advocates hope more funding will come from the Legislature to fund the Case Management, Outreach, Referral and  Education program, or CORE program.

Minnesota is home to more than 380,000 veterans. According to data from Veterans Administration facilities, 126 veterans served by V.A. hospitals, clinics and other sites in Minneapolis; St Cloud, Minn.; and Fargo and Sioux Falls, N.D., committed suicide in the last decade. But Veterans Administration officials say that could be an undercount, since many veterans do not receive services at the VA.

“The Obama administration continues to try to prevent the word ‘God’ from being used at the funerals of our heroes,” said. Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas).

“It’s unacceptable and I’m going to put a stop to it as fast as humanly possible,” Culberson told Fox News Radio. He attended a burial service at the cemetery undercover on July 8, when he says he witnessed volunteer members of the honor guard from the Veterans of Foreign Wars being prohibited from using any references to God.

Military praises 'fantastic' new post-traumatic stress therapy

Military praises ‘fantastic’ new post-traumatic stress therapyhttp://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=319737For the American soldier, it’s become the sneakiest of all sneak attacks to watch out for – the enemy’s final chance to wreak havoc by secretly following the soldier home and attacking him and his loved ones there.Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD – frequently characterized as “bringing the enemy home with you” – has become an epidemic in the U.S. military. But because of a dramatic breakthrough from the grassroots, there is new hope.

The problem is dire. Exacerbated by back-to-back tours of duty in a war environment where enemy combatants are often indistinguishable from civilians and every passing vehicle a potential car bomb, up to 20 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan war vets are currently struggling with PTSD,according to the federal Department of Veterans Affairs.

Some are filled with guilt and grief, wondering if God will forgive them for killing the enemy. Others know their marriages are on thin ice and don’t know what to do.

Sometimes, the Reboot Recovery meeting at Fort Campbell is their last option for help.

Then slowly, over homemade meals, they begin to talk about the problem that no soldier wants to admit: post-traumatic stress disorder.

Reboot is part of a movement among churches and religious groups to help veterans recover from PTSD. The movement’s leaders say veterans need medical care and professional counseling to recover, but spiritual care should be part of the equation.

Social Work students and alumni respond in record numbers to veterans' needs through internships and careers

Social Work students and alumni respond in record numbers to veterans’ needs through internships and careershttp://www.utexas.edu/features/2011/05/27/social_work_veterans/Social workers go where the need is, and their battlefield is large.

With military involvement today in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya there is no greater need than working with veterans and their numerous issues such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, visual impairment, chronic pain, substance abuse, disabilities, homelessness, finances and family challenges.

The School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin had a record number of students choosing a veteran placement this year and numerous alumni are working with the veteran population. Since 1996, the school has had placements or internships at veteran and active military facilities in several states.

Social Work alumna Paula Taylor, whose husband is a U.S. Army chaplain, wants to work with veterans.
